  • The New York Yankees have won 27 World Series.
  • The Yankees last won the World Series in 2009.
  • A record 41 World Series appearances is 19 clear of any other franchise.

The New York Yankees are by far the most successful team in MLB history. Consistently listed among the favourites in World Series odds, the Yankees have produced numerous dynastic teams.

The 2010s was the first decade since the 1910s in which the Yankees didn’t register a World Series appearance.

How Many World Series Have the Yankees Won?

The Yankees have won 27 World Series.

Across 41 Fall Classic appearances, the Yankees have only lost the final series of the season on 13 occasions. Three of those were in their first four World Series.

The Yankees won four consecutive titles between 1936 and 1939 and five straight titles from 1949 to 1953.

Since reaching their first World Series in 1921, 1981 to 1998 is the longest stretch the Yankees didn’t appear in a World Series.

The 20-year spell from 1978 to 1998 is their biggest gap between rings.

When Was the Last Time the Yankees Won the World Series?

The Yankees last won the World Series in 2009, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in six games.

Despite regularly being listed as one of the online sports betting favourites in baseball playoff odds since 2009, the Yankees failed to reach the World Series between 2009 and 2024.

The 2024 postseason saw their sixth ALCS appearance since their last pennant, but they lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Yankees lost the ALCS to the Houston Astros in 2017, 2019, and 2022. The Astros also eliminated them in the 2015 wild-card game.

The New York Yankees have won 27 World Series in 41 Fall Classic appearances.

The Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers are the only other team to reach the World Series on more than 20 occasions. The St. Louis Cardinals are the second-most successful team in MLB history, having won 11 titles.

The Yankees are featured in the three most frequent World Series matchups. They have faced the Dodgers 12 times in the Fall Classic, winning eight of the series. Seven World Series have seen the Yankees take on the New York/San Francisco Giants, with the Giants winning on just two occasions.

Of teams to play multiple World Series against the Yankees, the Cardinals are the only team with a winning record. St. Louis defeated the Yankees in three of their five series.

Given their dominance of the World Series record books, it’s no surprise the Yankees have produced the most World Series MVPs with 12. Former Yankees also lead the way in various World Series categories, including games played, homers, and hits.
