  • Roberto Alomar is the best Blue Jays second baseman ever.
  • Marcus Semien’s 2021 season earns him second spot in my rankings.
  • Devon Travis and Cavan Biggio both started their Jays careers strongly.

There is only one second baseman in Toronto Blue Jays history who has consistently delivered above-average production at the plate. As a result, I had to delve a bit deeper when ranking the best Blue Jays second basemen.

High-level defence had to be considered, as did players who had short periods of strong offensive performance, even if it came at a time when the Blue Jays were outsiders in baseball playoff odds.

Five Best Toronto Blue Jays Second Basemen

RankPlayerBlue Jays Years
1Roberto Alomar1991-95
2Marcus Semien2021
3Aaron Hill2005-11
4Devon Travis2015-18
5Cavan Biggio2019-24

1. Roberto Alomar

A five-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner during his time with the Blue Jays, Roberto Alomar was a lock for the top spot. Alomar, of course, also won two titles as a Jay and picked up MVP honours in the 1992 ALCS.

A total of 20.4 fWAR is miles ahead of any other second baseman. Three straight sixth-place finishes in AL MVP voting reflect how important Alomar was to the Jays during the most successful period in franchise history.

The fact he only led the team in bWAR in one season shows just how talented those rosters were, but it doesn’t detract from his significance in the history of the Blue Jays.

2. Marcus Semien

It shows how weak the field is when a player who spent one year in Toronto slots in second in my rankings.

After arriving at the Jays via a trade with the Oakland Athletics, Marcus Semien posted 7.1 bWAR in his lone season with the team. He became one of the sportsbook favourites to win MVP, earning a third-place finish, along with a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger.

It was the best season ever from a Blue Jays second baseman. Semien played all 162 games, hitting 45 home runs on his way to a 131 OPS+.

3. Aaron Hill

Despite a 92 wRC+, Aaron Hill rounds out the top three thanks to his 12.4 fWAR. Hill’s defence at second was a factor to consider when analyzing Blue Jays odds, along with his streaky power, which saw him hit 62 home runs across the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Hill’s 96 homers are by far the most of any Jays second baseman. His 114 OPS+ in 2010 earned him a 12th-place MVP finish and the only All-Star nod of his career.

4. Devon Travis

Damaso Garcia and Orlando Hudson are third and fourth in fWAR among Blue Jays second basemen, but neither had the offensive production to warrant a place on this list.

Eight Jays second basemen have collected more fWAR than Devon Travis. However, his role in the team reaching the ALCS in 2015 and 2016 is important, with a 131 OPS+ in 2015 and a 108 OPS+ in 2016.

Having been ranked the 84th-best prospect by Baseball America before the 2014 season, Travis made an immediate impact in the majors, but he desperately struggled at the plate in 2017 and 2018. He became a free agent at the end of the 2019 campaign and began coaching in 2021.

5. Cavan Biggio

Like Travis, Cavan Biggio’s Blue Jays career started strongly before fading. Biggio posted 5 bWAR with a 118 OPS+ across the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He looked set to be part of the long-term core with Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Biggio then had a 92 OPS+ over the next three seasons, followed by an 82 OPS+ in 44 games in 2024. Traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers midway through the season, the former fifth-round pick still ranks fifth in fWAR among all Blue Jays second basemen.
