5 Best Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Football Players, Ranked

While it’s unlikely that the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors will be atop the NCAAF odds to win the national championship anytime soon, that doesn’t diminish the program’s rich history since its founding in 1909.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors All-Time Greatest Football Players

1. Colt Brennan

Brennan played for Hawaii from 2005 to 2007 after stints with Colorado (2002 to 2003) and Saddleback (2004). 

While with Hawaii, he won the Sammy Baugh Trophy (given to the nation’s top passer), was a two-time third-team All-American, two-time WAC Offensive Player of the Year, two-time first-team All-WAC, and the program retired his No. 15. 

He threw for 14,193 yards in three seasons (second in program history), 131 passing touchdowns (first), and racked up 14,740 total yards (second) and 146 total touchdowns (first). 

In 2006, he threw for 5,549 passing yards and 58 touchdowns, which are also single-season records. 

2. Timmy Chang

As of the 2025 college football season, Chang is Hawaii’s head coach, but he was their quarterback from 2000 to 2004. 

He was first-team All-WAC, second-team All-WAC, the WAC Freshman of the Year, and was the Hawaii Bowl MVP twice. Chang was also a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. 

He threw for 17,072 yards (first) and 117 touchdowns (second. He racked up 16,910 total yards (first) and 123 total touchdowns (second). 

3. Gary Allen

Allen played running back for the Rainbow Warriors from 1987 to 1981. 

He ran for 3,451 yards (first) and 19 touchdowns (eighth). 

Allen was three-time All-WAC and was inducted into the University of Hawaii Ring of Honour. 

4. Davone Bess

Bess played for Hawaii from 2005 to 2007. During his time there, he had 293 catches (first) for 3,610 yards (third) and 41 touchdowns (first). 

In all three seasons, he had no less than 1,124 receiving yards or 12 touchdowns. 

He was a second-team All-American in 2007. 

5. Al Noga

Noga played along the defensive line for Hawaii from 1984 to 1987. 

He had 33 sacks (second), including 17 in 1986. Those 17 sacks are a single-season Hawaii record.

He was the WAC Defensive Player of the Year and three-time first-team All-WAC.
