Coastal Carolina Chanticleers All-Time Greatest Football Players
1. Grayson McCall
McCall played for Coastal Carolina from 2019 to 2023, and he threw for 10,005 passing yards (most in program history), 88 touchdowns (first), 11,118 total yards of offence (second), and 106 total touchdowns (first). He also recorded 18 rushing touchdowns (tied for 10th).
He was a three-time Sun Belt Player of the Year, Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, and three-time first-team All-Sun Belt.
He led Coastal Carolina to a 10-0 season in 2020, and they were nationally ranked. They would go on to lose in the Cure Bowl.
2. Tyler Thigpen
Thigpen was the team’s quarterback from 2003 to 2006. As part of the inaugural team, Thigpen helped put the program on the map.
He was the Big South Player of the Year in 2006. He also holds a 30-8 record all time as a starter.
Over his career, he threw for 6,598 yards (third), including 3,296 yards in 2006 (second in a single season). He also had 53 touchdown passes (third), with 29 coming in 2006. His 29 passing touchdowns are the most in a single season for the Chanticleers.
In 2006, he also ran for 656 yards and five touchdowns.
3. Jerome Simpson
Simpson was with Coastal Carolina from 2004 to 2007 and was a top target for Thigpen.
Over his career, Simpson caught 161 passes (fourth) for 2,720 yards (second) and 44 touchdowns (first).
He was a first-team All-American, a two-time first-team All-Big South, a second-team All-Big South, and Big South Freshman of the Year.
In 2006, he went over 1,000 yards and had 16 touchdowns.
4. De’Angelo Henderson
Henderson played running back for Coastal Carolina just before they joined the FBS.
Over his career, he ran for 4,635 yards (first), 58 touchdowns (first), and had 97 receptions (tied for 10th).
In 2014, he had 20 rushing scores.
From 2014 to 2016, he had no less than 1,156 rushing yards in a single season.
He was the Big South Offensive Player of the Year and a two-time first-team All-Big South.
5. Josh Norman
Norman suited up for the Chanticleers from 2008 to 2011.
He had 13 interceptions (second), including eight in 2009, which is the most in a single Chanticleers season. Of those eight, he had three in one game against Gardner-Webb.
He also recorded 23 pass breakups.
Norman was a first-team All-American and a three-time first-team All-Big South.
