Appalachian State Mountaineers All-Time Greatest Football Players

1. Armanti Edwards

Edwards was the quarterback for App. State from 2006 to 2009. 

Over his time there, he threw for 10,392 yards (most in program history). His 3,291 yards in 2009 are the third most in a single season. 

Edwards does hold the single-game passing yards record with 433 in a 2008 game against South Carolina State. 

He threw 74 touchdowns (second), ran for 4,361 yards (fourth), and added 65 rushing touchdowns (second). 

Additionally, he’s the program’s all-time leader in total yards with 14,753 and total touchdowns with 139. 

He won two national titles at the FCS level, won the Walter Payton Award twice (best FCS player), was a two-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Year, three-time first-team All-SoCon, second-team SoCon, and the program retired his No. 14. 

Edwards is enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. 

2. Dexter Coakley

Coakley was a linebacker for the Mountaineers from 1993 to 1996.

He recorded 616 tackles (first).

Coakley also holds four of the top eight single-season tackles records, headlined by 166 in 1996 (second). 

He’s a two-time Buck Buchanan Award winner (most outstanding defensive player in the FCS/I-AA), was a three-time NCAA I-AA All-American, three-time SoCon Defensive Player of the Year, two-time SoCon Male Athlete of the Year, SoCon Freshman of the Year, three-time first-team All-SoCon, and the school retired his No. 32.

On top of all of that, he’s enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. 

3. Kevin Richardson

Richardson played running back for the Mountaineers from 2004 to 2007, where he racked up 4,804 rushing yards (second), including the single-season record with 1,676 in 2006. 

He’s also the program’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns with 66, scoring 30 of them in 2006 alone. 

His 66 touchdowns are the fifth-most among all players in program history. 

He’s a three-time national champion at the FCS level. 

4. John Settle

Settle played running back for App. State from 1983 to 1986 and recorded 4,409 rushing yards (third) and 43 rushing touchdowns (fourth). 

He’s second in single-season rushing yards with 1,661 and third in single-season rushing touchdowns with 20. 

The program retired his No. 23. 

5. Brian Quick

Quick was a wide receiver for App. State from 2007 to 2010. 

He caught 202 passes (third) for 3,41 yards (first) and 31 touchdowns (first). 

His 71 receptions in 2011 are the seventh most in a single season. 

Quick also holds two of the top seven single-season receiving yards and touchdown records. 

He was a member of the 2007 national title squad and was a two-time FCS All-American.
