In professional football, the NFL is the most prominent league, but the CFL is the next best option, despite significant differences in gameplay.

Given its status and established record, it may be fair to ask: What would the CFL odds for teams look like against NFL competition?

Below, I’ll go over the reasons the CFL doesn’t join the NFL, including player quality, rule differences, and more.

Why Don’t the CFL and NFL Merge?

There are numerous reasons the CFL hasn’t merged with the NFL.

  • The rules in the CFL and NFL differ significantly, including more players on the field, three downs instead of four, and more.
  • The CFL has existed since the 1950s and has a deep history in Canada. Each team requires a minimum number of Canadian-born players.
  • The quality of the players strongly favours the NFL. Many former NFL players go on to play in the CFL after their NFL careers end. That said, players like Cameron Wake, Warren Moon, and more have had success going from the CFL to the NFL.
  • Logistical issues, including travel and taxes, could pose problems.

Does the CFL Have American Teams?

No. The CFL doesn’t currently have any American teams. During the mid-1990s, seven American-based CFL teams were defunct within just a few seasons.

These CFL teams failed in the U.S. for various reasons.

Why Is There No NFL Team in Canada?

There’s no one reason there isn’t an NFL team in Canada. If the NFL were to expand into Canada, Toronto would be a likely destination, but this is within the Buffalo Bills’ “home-field” territory, which stretches 75 miles.

Adding another NFL franchise and expanding are also expensive.

Additionally, should the NFL add a team in Canada, there would be more direct competition between the leagues.

All this being said, a potential expansion isn’t completely ruled out for the future.
