  • Anyone wearing No. 50 to 69 is considered an ineligible receiver.
  • Players wearing No. 0 to 49 and 70 to 99 are eligible receivers.
  • Ball carriers can wear any number.

In football, jersey numbers often indicate a player’s position, but how does that work in the CFL? Is it different than the NFL?

While it may not directly affect CFL odds, understanding which numbers are eligible can clarify player roles on the field.

Below, I’ll break down what numbers specific players can wear in the CFL.

What Are Eligible Numbers in Canadian Football?

In the CFL, the number enforcement isn’t as rigid as the NFL.

Eligible receivers must wear numbers between 0 and 49 and 70 and 99. Anyone wearing numbers 50 and 69 is considered an ineligible receiver.

That said, if a player is wearing 50 and 69, they must report as eligible to the referee before the play.

What Numbers Are Eligible to Run the Ball in the CFL?

Any player on offence can run the ball regardless of their jersey number. This includes numbers 50 to 69—they can also run the ball.

Typically, though, ball carriers will wear numbers between 0 and 49 and 70 to 99.

What Are the Rules for Jersey Numbers in the CFL?

  • Eligible receivers must wear a number between 0 and 49 or 70 and 99.
  • Ineligible receivers will wear numbers 50 to 69.
  • Players wearing numbers 50 to 69 must report as eligible before the play to be considered an eligible receiver.
  • Any player, regardless of number, can run the ball.
  • Unlike the NFL, there’s no strict enforcement of specific position groups wearing certain numbers.
