While the Ottawa Redblacks chances of winning it all have been poor in recent years, there’s still plenty of time for them to get back on track and into Grey Cup form as they were in 2016.
With this being a newer franchise in the league, there aren’t decades of players to sort through for my all-time top-five list.
That said, there’s still plenty of talent that’s come through Ottawa, and below is my list of the best Ottawa Redblacks players of all time.
Who Are the Best Ottawa Redblacks?
| Rank | Player | Position | UConn Years |
| 1 | Henry Burris | QB | 2014-2016 |
| 2 | Trevor Harris | QB | 2016-2018 |
| 3 | Greg Ellingson | WR | 2015-2018 |
| 4 | Antoine Pruneau | DB | 2014-2022 |
| 5 | Brad Sinopoli | WR | 2015-2020 |
1. Henry Burris
The Redblacks have won one Grey Cup, which came under Burris’s quarterbacking. A long-time veteran of the league, Burris arrived in the CFL in 1998 and found his way to the Redblacks in their inaugural 2014 season. His best season came in 2015 when he had 5,703 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He also added seven rushing scores.
He was the 2016 Grey Cup MVP, beating the 15-2-1 Calgary Stampeders with his 8-9-1 Redblacks.
He won the CFL Most Outstanding Player Award in 2015 with the Redblacks and also received the Tom Pate Memorial Award.
He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2020.
2. Trevor Harris
After Burris left Ottawa following the Grey Cup win, Harris took over in 2017 and 2018 when he set franchise records for most points (420), passing touchdowns (68), passing yards (13,096), completions (1,071), completion percentage (70.6%), and quarterback passer rating (104.6).
He threw for at least 4,679 yards and 22 touchdowns in those two seasons.
He also played in 10 games during the 2016 season, when Burris won the Grey Cup. Harris started as the backup, but Burris got hurt, Harris went in, and then Harris got hurt, which allowed Burris, at 41 years old, to lead them to the Grey Cup.
Still, Harris started 10 games that season and had 3,301 passing yards, 16 touchdown passes, and four interceptions.
3. Greg Ellingson
A member of the 2016 Grey Cup team, Ellingson’s best season in Ottawa came in 2017. He had 96 receptions, 1,459 yards, and 12 touchdowns. He holds franchise records for most career receiving touchdowns (30) and most receiving touchdowns in a season (12), and is second in all-time receiving yards with 4,866. He also had the most receiving yards in a season, with 1,459 in 2017.
4. Antoine Pruneau
No one has played more games in a Redblacks uniform than Pruneau. He was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 CFL Draft and played there his entire CFL career from 2014 to 2022. He finished his career with 122 games, 374 tackles, 10 interceptions, four sacks, four forced fumbles, and one defensive touchdown.
He was a CFL East All-Star in 2017 and was part of the Grey Cup-winning team in 2016.
5. Brad Sinopoli
Sinpoli rounds out my list. He played for the Redblacks from 2015 to 2020 and was named a CFL All-Star in 2018 and a CFL East All-Star in 2015, 2017, and 2018.
He’s the Redblacks all-time leader in receiving yards (5,127) and receptions (455), and he also holds the single-season record for receptions at 116 in 2018.
