Yes, the NFL is popular in Canada. In fact, they appear to favour the NFL over the CFL. 

According to a February 2023 Angus Reid study, three in five football fans in Canada (62%) would choose the Super Bowl over the Grey Cup. If they could only watch one of the games, two in five (38%) would prefer the Grey Cup. The territories that prefer the Grey Cup mainly include Alberta and the Prairies. 

Here’s what their data found by region:

  • Follow the NFL: 62%
  • Follow the CFL: 38%
  • British Columbia: 59% Super Bowl; 41% Grey Cup
  • Alberta: 42% Super Bowl; 58% Grey Cup
  • Saskatchewan/Manitoba: 30% Super Bowl; 70% Grey Cup
  • Ontario: 66% Super Bowl; 34% Grey Cup
  • Quebec: 78 % Super Bowl; 22% Grey Cup
  • Atlantic Canada: 74% Super Bowl; 26% Grey Cup

Among men aged 18 to 34, 26% follow the NFL more closely, whereas one in nine (11%) follow the CFL. Men aged 35 to 54 favoured the NFL 34% to 19%. Finally, men aged 55 and older were approximately equal across the leagues. 

Angus Reid also reported that among fans, 44% prefer the NFL to the CFL, 36% prefer the CFL to the NFL, and 19% prefer both equally.
