The CFL was established in January 1958, and since then, numerous teams have come and gone from the league. When you browse CFL odds and compare it to the NFL, you’ll find far fewer teams, but just how many teams are there?
Below, I’ll tell you how many CFL teams there are right now and discuss whether there’s ever been a Canada-based NFL squad.
How Many Teams Are in the CFL?
As of the 2026 season, there are nine teams in the CFL.
However, in the mid-90s, there were more. Within just a couple of seasons, there were seven, which are now defunct CFL teams.
Long story short: The CFL failed in the U.S., where these seven teams were based. Now, every CFL team is based solely in Canada.
Was There Ever a Canadian NFL Team?
No. While a Canadian team has been discussed and rumoured, there are numerous logistical, financial, and other reasons why there isn’t one. The closest thing to a Canadian team in the NFL is the Buffalo Bills, located about 60 miles from Toronto by air.
