CFL Hall of Fame Members Top 10 Ranking

The Canadian Football Hall of Fame was established in 1972 and is located in Hamilton, Ontario. The most recent class included Josh Bourke, John Bowman, Larry Crawford, Jacques Dussault, Solomon Elimimian, Lloyd Fairbanks, and Larry Smith — all players who single-handedly influenced football odds game in and game out.

Now, below, I’ll sort through the entire CFL Hall of Famers roster and rank the top 10.

Spoiler alert: I’m going heavy on quarterbacks.

CFL Hall of Fame Members: Top 10 Ranking

1. Doug Flutie — BC, Calgary, Toronto

Flutie played just seven years in the CFL, but no one was more impactful. He won three Grey Cups, three Grey Cup MVP awards, and was a six-time CFL Most Outstanding Player. He was ninth all time in passing yards (41,355) and passing touchdowns (270).

He threw for over 6,000 yards in 1993.

2. Damon Allen — Edmonton, Ottawa, Hamilton, Memphis, BC, Toronto

Playing 350 games in the CFL from 1985 through 2007, Allen is well-traveled, but I can’t help but respect how long he played. He’s second all time in passing touchdowns (394) and passing yards (72,381), but he was also an elite runner with the football. He finished third all time in rushing yards (11,920) and rushing touchdowns (93).

He was a four-time Grey Cup champion.

3. Anthony Calvillo — Las Vegas, Hamilton, Montreal

Calvillo fell to third on my list only because of how dominant Flutie was in a short time, and Allen’s rushing ability, but Calvillo is the CFL’s all-time leader in passing yards (79,816) and passing touchdowns (455). No other quarterback in CFL history has surpassed 400 passing touchdowns.

He won four Grey Cups, was a Grey Cup MVP, three-time Most Outstanding Player, and seven-time Terry Evanshen Trophy winner.

4. Warren Moon — Edmonton

Playing in the CFL for six seasons, Moon won the Grey Cup five times, all for Edmonton. He threw for 144 touchdowns, 21,228 yards, and 14 rushing scores. He was a two-time Grey Cup MVP, the CFL Most Outstanding Player (1983), a two-time single-season passing leader, and a three-time single-season passing touchdown leader.

He’s a member of both the CFL and NFL Hall of Fame.

5. Ron Lancaster — Ottawa, Saskatchewan

Winding back the clock, Lancaster played from 1960 to 1978, and at that time, he won four Grey Cups, was a five-time All-Star, and played in 288 games.

He’s seventh all time in passing yards (50,535), fourth in passing touchdowns (333), and won 142 games as a coach.

6. Mike Pringle — Sacramento, Baltimore, Montreal, Edmonton

Running back George Reed held the rushing yardage record in the NFL for decades; then Pringle broke it with 16,425 yards.

The Atlanta Falcons originally drafted him, but in the CFL, he won three Grey Cups and is second all time in rushing touchdowns with 125.

He played in 15 fewer games than Reed.

7. George Reed — Saskatchewan

Honestly, Pringle and Reed are 6A and 6B for me. They’re incredibly close in the rankings. I opted for Pringle because he played fewer games, and beat Reed’s rushing yardage record, which he held for decades. The belief is that if Pringle played 15 additional games, he could’ve beaten Reed’s rushing touchdown record.

With all that said, Reed is a CFL legend and arguably one of the best players of all time. He won just one Grey Cup, was a 10-time All-Star, and was the Most Outstanding Player in the CFL in 1965.

8. Milt Stegall — Winnipeg

Playing his entire career with Winnipeg, Stegall never won a Grey Cup but finished second all time in receiving yards (15,153), first in touchdown catches (144), and eighth in receptions (854). He played in 75 fewer games than Geroy Simon, who’s coming up on this list.

He was the 2002 Most Outstanding Player, the Tom Pate Memorial Award winner in 2007, and was a nine-time All-Star.

9. Geroy Simon — Winnipeg, BC, Saskatchewan

Simon is the all-time leader in receiving yards with 16,352. No other receiver has cracked 16,000 in the history of the league. He also finished third all time in touchdown catches (103) and second in receptions (1,029) — he’s one of just four players ever to catch more than 1,000 passes.

He won three Grey Cups, was a six-time All-Star, and was the CFL Most Outstanding Player in 2006.

10. Lui Passaglia — BC

Simply put, this guy’s career spanned four decades. Passaglia began in 1976 and retired in 2000. He played in 408 games, which is the most in CFL history.

He was nine points shy of 4,000 career points.

Simply put, he makes the list, despite his position as kicker, because of his longevity. Playing with one team, he won three Grey Cup wins, including a game-winning field goal in the 2000 Grey Cup—his final season.
