The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have long been atop the league, posting winning records since 2016.
The franchise has won 12 Grey Cups since its founding in 1930, most recently in 2021.
With nearly 100 years of history to consider, below is my list of the top six Blue Bombers.
Who Are the Best Winnipeg Blue Bombers Ever?
| Rank | Player | Position | Blue Bombers Years |
| 1 | Milt Stegall | WR/SB | 1995-2008 |
| 2 | Chris Walby | OL | 1981-1996 |
| 3 | Leo Lewis | RB | 1976-1992 |
| 4 | Dieter Brock | QB | 1983-1996 |
| 5 | Bob Cameron | P | 1968-1973 and 1977-1978 |
| 6 | James Murphy | WR | 1982-1990 |
1. Milt Stegall
Beginning his professional career in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals from 1992 to1994 and briefly with the Green Bay Packers in 1995, Stegall moved north to join the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1995 and remained there until 2008.
There, he was a nine-time CFL All-Star, the Most Outstanding Player in 2002, a Tom Pate Memorial Trophy winner in 2007, and currently holds Blue Bombers records in touchdowns (147), receiving touchdowns (144), receiving yards (15,153), receptions (854), and yards from scrimmage (15,208).
He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2012. Stegall, unfortunately, never won a Grey Cup with the team.
2. Chris Walby
Playing all but one year of his CFL career with Winnipeg, Walby is a legend of the franchise, winning three Grey Cups, two Most Outstanding Lineman awards, and he was also a nine-time CFL All-Star.
Many consider Walby to be the best offensive lineman to suit up in the CFL.
He’s tied for the third-most seasons played with the franchise (16) and is third in games played (249).
Walby was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2003.
3. Leo Lewis
Playing his entire CFL career with the Blue Bombers from 1955 to1966, Lewis won four Grey Cups with the team during their triumphant run in the 1950s and 1960s. Lewis and the Blue Bombers won the Grey Cup in 1958, 1959, 1961, and 1962.
He was a CFL All-Star in 1962 and named a CFL West All-Star six times.
Lewis was originally a sixth-round pick by the Baltimore Colts in the 1955 NFL Draft, but never played a down for them.
He finished his career with 1,351 carries for 8,861 yards and 48 touchdowns. Lewis also averaged 29.1 yards per kickoff.
Although his 8,861 rushing yards have been broken, it was the team’s record for 41 years.
Lewis is third in touchdowns (75), third in rushing touchdowns (48), second in rushing yards (8,861), second in rushing attempts (1,351), and third in yards from scrimmage (13,112) in Blue Bombers history.
Lewis was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1973.
4. Dieter Brock
The first and only quarterback on my list for the Blue Bombers, Brock played for Winnipeg from 1974 to 1983, finishing his career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and, ultimately, in 1985, with the Los Angeles Rams.
He was a two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player and All-Star in 1980 and 1981.
Brock holds Blue Bombers records in passing yards (29,623), pass completions (2,167), pass attempts (3,777), and passing touchdowns (187).
He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1995.
5. Bob Cameron
While his position of being a punter is far from the most important on the field, I had to pay respect to Cameron here.
Cameron played for the Blue Bombers from 1980 to 2002 and led the franchise in games played (394) and seasons (23). To put that in perspective, he’s played in 101 more games than the player second on the list, Troy Westwood.
Cameron also holds the record for most consecutive games played with 353. That’s also one more game than Jeff Feagles from the NFL.
Cameron won three Grey Cups with the team in 1984, 1988, and 1990 and was a four-time CFL All-Star.
Interestingly, he was the No. 6 overall pick in the 1977 CFL Draft by the Edmonton Eskimos.
During his career, he was also the Grey Cup Most Valuable Canadian in 1988 and, that same year, received the Manitoba Male Athlete of the Year nod.
To this day, he’s the CFL’s all-time leading punter with 134,301 yards.
Cameron was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
6. James Murphy
Murphy played for the Blue Bombers from 1982 to 1990. During his tenure, he won three Grey Cups and was named the Grey Cup MVP in 1988.
Additionally, he was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player in 1986, and was a two-time CFL All-Star and four-time CFL East All-Star.
Over his career, he recorded 62 touchdowns (fifth in franchise history), 61 receiving touchdowns (second), 9,036 receiving yards (second), 573 receptions (second), and 9,123 yards from scrimmage (fourth).
He’s enshrined in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
