For as long as Hamilton Tiger-Cats odds have been available, fans of the home team have enjoyed wagering on the squad (although there hasn’t been much recent success on the field).

The Tiger-Cats have won eight Grey Cups since their inception in 1950, but the most recent came in 1999.

Throughout their 70-year history, several iconic players have come through their ranks, and below, I’ll list the top five players in Tiger-Cats history.

Who Are the Best Hamilton Tiger-Cats Players?

2Hal PattersonWR/DB1961-1967
3John BarrowDT/OT1957-1970

5Danny McManusQB1998-2005

1. Garney Henley

Playing for the Tiger-Cats from 1960 to 1975, Henley never played anywhere else in his career. He won four Grey Cups with the team, played in seven Grey Cup games, and was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player in 1972. Additionally, he was a two-time Jeff Russel Memorial recipient in 1963 and 1972.

Throughout his career, he intercepted 59 passes for 916 yards and five touchdowns.

He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1979 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

2. Hal Patterson

Starting his career with Montreal from 1954 to 1960, Patterson landed with the Tiger-Cats from 1961 to 1967. During his time with the team, he won three Grey Cups, was a three-time CFL All-Star, and a five-time CFL East All-Star.

Throughout his career, he caught 460 passes for 9,473 yards and 75 touchdowns, averaging 20.6 yards per catch.

He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1971.

3. John Barrow

Drafted in the fifth round by the Detroit Lions in 1957, Barrow opted to play in the CFL for Hamilton instead. He played there from 1957 to 1970, was a four-time Grey Cup Champion, and was a four-time All-Canadian from 1964 to 1967.

Additionally, Barrow was an 11-time All-Star on defence and was an offensive All-Star four times.

Barrow was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1976.

4. Grover Covington

A more recent player, Covington played for Hamilton as a defensive end from 1981 to 1991. He was the Grey Cup Most Valuable Defensive Player in 1986, won the James P. McCaffrey Trophy in 1988, and, in that same year, won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award.

Covington was a CFL All-Star in 1985, 1986, 1988, and 1989.

He finished his career with 157 sacks, which is a CFL record.

Covington was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2000.

5. Danny McManus

I debated McManus or Angelo Mosca here, but I opted for McManus due to his success at the quarterback position.

McManus played for the Tiger-Cats from 1998 to 2005. He was the quarterback of the Tiger-Cats’ most recent Grey Cup win in 1999.

He holds the Tiger-Cats franchise records in career passing yards (33,841), completions (2,368), and passing touchdowns (164).

McManus was also the third player ever to reach 50,000 passing yards.

He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2011.
